Busyness

Yesterday I read this article from the NY Times. It's a great article about busyness and how some of us fill our lives with things that make us incredibly busy in order to feel important.  And how we don't need to do that.  I sent it off to the hubbs letting him know that I was thinking about it.  Last night after getting the kids to bed, getting exercise and watching our favorite bad Netflix show we snuggled on the couch and talked about it.

That may not seem like a big deal but in a world where we are still adjusting to commute times, winter, 2 kids and new city taking a moment to talk about something real that's making us think is a BIG DEAL.

So read the article--it just might prompt enlightened talking to your spouse or friends or family.

  1. Loved the article.....Remember good old Thoreau's quote about not valuing the busyness of the ant above the singing of the grasshopper?

I'd never thought about work being built as a punishment, but it was....a necessary one for growth, but the Garden of Eden was a place to be idle....

  2. Two thoughts about this: I am immersed in the book "Quiet" by Susan Cain about introverts. He is clearly an introvert, and the life he paints for me as a fellow-introvert sounds like heaven. I want the life he describes. I wonder whether extroverts agree with us.

Second, I am reminded of the Mormon ideal of "work." It is considered a highly sought after characteristic to be a good worker. It keeps us honest. I recognize the difference between "work" and "busy" but there does feel like an overlap there, no?

  3. Loved the line "if your job wasn’t performed by a cat or a boa constrictor in a Richard Scarry book I’m not sure I believe it’s necessary."
